Happy day for senior citizens
DESPITE facing difficulty walking properly, 63-year-old widow Sharifah Bibi managed to struggle through the crowd to collect her RM100 payment.
She was among 6,676 eligible senior citizens from the Air Itam and Air Putih state constituencies in Penang who receive the payment at Maybank Kampung Baru branch in Jalan Air Itam.
The money was given under the state’s Senior Citizens Appreciation Programme.
Aid brings cheer: Sharifah showing her RM100 note after collecting the payment during the state's Senior Citizens Appreciation Programme.
Sharifah, who suffered a broken leg in an accident eight years ago, was happy with the money as she could now add it to her savings to buy medication for the injury.
Also spotted at the programme was M. Suppeah, 73, and his wife P. Kristanamah, 69, who each received RM100.
“We are already pensioners and feel very grateful to the state government for the cash aid.
“My wife and I have heart problems which require constant medication which is expensive.
“This money is very important to us as we can buy the medication that we need,” said Suppeah.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who greeted the recipients, said that the state government was ready to help the people.
“We are willing to help everyone who are in need,” he said.
A total of 135,220 senior citizens in Penang have registered for the appreciation programme.
The RM100 payment was made to senior citizens from the Air Itam (6,676), Air Putih (2,828), Sungai Pinang (3,800) and Tanjung Bungah (3,439) constituencies on Saturday.
Also present was Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai.
